Don’t miss the window to check in or you’ll be left out.
Remember when the airport theory was trending on TikTok earlier this year? The basic idea was that you can show up at the airport just before your flight takes off, with maybe 15 or 20 minutes to spare. The result: passengers kept missing their flights. And now there’s now another reason to reconsider trying this maneuver yourself. United Airlines has announced changes to its check-in policy. Starting June 3, all passengers must check in at least 45 minutes before departure for domestic flights within the U.S.

Whether you’re traveling with checked baggage or not, the time window is the same. Previously, passengers without checked bags had until 30 minutes before departure to check in, giving them an extra 15 minutes. That grace period will no longer apply—now the policy is uniform.
A United Airlines spokesperson told Yahoo News, “The change brings greater consistency for our customers by aligning with our current checked baggage deadline and the check-in policies followed by most other airlines.”
Here’s the critical part: If you don’t check in on time, you might not be allowed to board your flight or check your luggage. “If you don’t meet your check-in time limits, we’ll do our best to find another option. However, we have the right to deny service which may result in cancellation of your reservation, denied boarding or the option to check your bags,” the airline’s website warns.

Be sure to confirm check-in time limits on United’s website, as they can vary by airport. Generally, travelers should check in for international flights at least 60 minutes before departure, though some airports—such as Munich, Dubai, and Delhi—require a 75-minute cut-off. For domestic trips, arriving two hours before departure is recommended; for international flights, aim for three hours ahead. The airline also advises arriving at the gate at least 15 minutes before boarding for domestic flights and 30 minutes before boarding for international ones.

Also keep in mind that not everyone is eligible for online check-in. You may be required to check in at the airport if you’ve made a special request, are using a paper ticket, or are flying basic economy. Be aware of these restrictions so you don’t miss your flight.
American Airlines has a similar check-in policy. Whether you’re checking baggage or checking in at the airport, you need to do so at least 45 minutes before departure. Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure and closes 45 minutes prior.
Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines has narrowed the check-in window even further: for both travelers with and without checked bags, check-in closes 50 minutes before departure.
Alaska Airlines also enforces a no-show policy, which has recently been adopted by its sister airline, Hawaiian Airlines. If you miss your flight or fail to cancel or change it before departure, you’ll be considered a no-show. This results in the cancellation of any remaining flights on your itinerary, including connections and returns. “Per our no-show policy, you must change or cancel your reservation before your flight departs in order to receive future travel credit,” the website advises. You’ll also forfeit any refunds or miles, so contact the airline as soon as possible.
