AAA projects 72.2 million Americans will travel this holiday weekend.
For travelers, this Independence Day is one of the best times to explore the country, with the 250th anniversary events and the FIFA World Cup both in full swing. But it may also be one of the busiest. AAA predicts that 72.2 million people will be leaving home this July 4th holiday period, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing to screen nearly 18.7 million air passengers. If you are also going away this weekend, make sure you plan ahead and take precautions to have a smooth start.
July 2 will be the busiest day to travel—by road or by air. If you still have space to maneuver, avoid Thursday. And if you don’t, then pack patience because you will need it.
From June 27 to July 5, there will be over 61 million on the road, AAA projects. That accounts for about 85% of all Independence Day travelers, despite rising gas prices. The roads would be the busiest on Thursday, and car rental company Hertz expects it to be the busiest car pickup day. Even car rentals are more 10% expensive than last year.
Those who are taking the wheel this week should leave early (before 11 am) to avoid traffic. On July 4th, however, you would be better off by leaving after 3 p.m., AAA advises.

There are also a few common road safety tips that might serve as a good reminder. First off, never drink and drive. It is not just a risk for you, but also for other drivers on the road. Also, make sure that your car is in good shape: check tire pressure, oil, and batteries. AAA responded to over 687,000 roadside assistance calls last year, and almost 30% were for battery replacement or flat tire. Slow down when there’s an emergency vehicle responding on the road and change lanes. And lastly, map the route (and your stops) and pack enough food and water for the road trip in case of traffic congestion.
AAA also released its top domestic destinations for the July 4 holiday: Seattle, Orlando, and Anchorage. “Alaska cruises are in peak season, that’s why Seattle, Anchorage, and Fairbanks are all top domestic destinations. Independence Day fireworks and festivities in New York, Chicago, and Boston also draw big crowds. Florida ranks high thanks to theme parks, beaches, and cruise ports,” it said.
Meanwhile, the TSA is also getting ready to screen 18.7 million people who will be flying between June 30 and July 6. It predicts that the highest volume of passengers, more than 3 million, will reach the airports across the country on July 2. There will be increased scrutiny, so pack as advised (no liquids more than 3.4 oz and no weapons in carry-on).
American Airlines will operate 80,000 flights between June 25 and July 6 and expects to carry a record 8.1 million passengers. United also released its holiday forecast, expecting to carry 6 million passengers between June 26 and July 6.
Needless to say, airports will remain crowded through Monday. Check your airport’s social media accounts or website for updates on security wait times, and consider taking public transportation if it’s a practical option. During peak travel periods, it’s also wise to arrive earlier than usual—especially if you’re traveling with a group or checking bags. Finally, monitor your flight status in real time so you’re immediately aware of any delays or schedule changes.
